Dr. Samantha Ross

Dr. Samantha Ross is an assistant professor in the Physical Education Teacher Education program within the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences at West Virginia University. Dr. Ross completed her doctoral training at Oregon State University, where she also received a master’s of public health in epidemiology.

Dr. Ross’ research and professional training rests on the central premise that all children have the right to access play and engage in a wide variety of recreational and leisure activities (Unicef Convention on Child Rights, 2014, Article 12 & 31, Unicef.org). Broadly, her current research examines the influence of adequate supports, and professional training on physical activity participation among individuals with disabilities.

Dr. Ross focuses on integrating adapted physical activity and epidemiological research approaches. As a researcher in adapted physical activity, Ross examines conceptual frameworks of disability, and how professional perceptions of disability impact implementation of inclusive fitness practices. Dr Ross is particularly interested in using a critical disability studies approach to examine how learning activities and pedagogical  approaches implemented within higher education programs (1) align with contemporary models of disability, and (2) develop student competencies around disability awareness and inclusive teaching practices. As an epidemiological researcher, Ross examines disparities in physical activity and health experienced by youth with disabilities, and the factors within community and service infrastructure that facilitate or hinder inclusive physical activity opportunities.

Dr Ross maintains professional membership with the North American Federation of Physical Activity (NAFAPA), Association of University Centers on Disability (AUCD), and Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE), among other professional organizations.
