Session 2 (9:45 am – 11:00 am): Job Search Workshop

The purpose of this session is for scholars to receive intimate feedback in small groups from faculty about job search materials.

Session 3 (11:15 am – 12:15 pm): Dr. Allison Tsuchida – Expanding Interscholastic Sport Programming in Hawaii, Cultural and Community Relevance, and Related Projects

Thursday, June 30

Session 1 (8:30 am– 9:30 am): Samantha Ross – Refining your Research Aims

Session 2 (9:45 am – 11:00 am): Research Workshop

During this session, scholars will engage in small groups with one faculty member to discuss intimately their research ideas for approximately 75 minutes.

Session 3 (11:15 am – 12:15 pm): Erin Centeio – The Importance of Culturally Relevant Comprehensive School Physical Activity Programs

12:30 pm – 5:00 pm Break and lunch on your own

5:00 pm– Luau, a cultural heritage of the pacific islands (families welcome)

This will be a scholar-only session, aimed at improving collaboration and increased networking between scholars.

Dr. Nathan M. Murata

Dr. Nathan M. Murata is Professor and Dean of the College of Education at the University of Hawai̕ i at Mānoa. He completed his BEd, MEd and special education certificate from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, with a PhD from The Ohio State University. He taught physical education in both private and public schools, served as Athletic Director and adapted physical educator. Dr. Murata taught at the University of Toledo prior to returning to Mānoa. At UH Mānoa, he was a recipient of multiple OSERS federal training grants from 2001-2017 whereby he was able to provide a Master of Science degree in Adapted Physical Education to graduates. Currently he is conducting research with the HuTT808 project, developing neurotrauma educational materials from school-aged students, and returning to school after a concussion. His passion continues to be with students with disabilities in sport and recreation where he initiated Friday Night Prime Time, an interscholastic sanctioned basketball program for students with and without disabilities from 12 local public high schools

Dr. Allison Tsuchida

Allison Tsuchida is a newly appointed Assistant Professor of Adapted Physical Activity, Physical Activity, and Exercise Science at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She has been actively involved in the development and organization of the Friday Night Prime Time inclusive interscholastic basketball program and in the curriculum development and assessment of Project Head, Neck, Spine. Over the past five years she has also worked with the Hawaii Concussion Awareness and Management Program (HCAMP) on various educational projects and outreach efforts

Dr. Erin Centeio

Erin E. Centeio, Ph.D., is currently an Associate Professor in the College of Education, Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science at The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. She obtained her Bachelor and Masters in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign and her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas at Austin. Erin spent six years at Wayne State University before joining the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Erin’s research focuses on integrating physical activity before, during, and afterschool and understanding the implications of physical activity and fitness on children’s health, as well as the cognitive and psychosocial benefits. Erin has received research and scholarship awards from SHAPE America, AERA, and AIESEP. She has been a principal/co-investigator on over 8 million dollars in grant funding, authored/coauthored over a 100 presentations at National and International conferences, and published 5 book chapters and over 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts focusing on integrating physical activity and healthy eating interventions into school and community settings.

Dr. Samantha Ross

Samantha Ross is an assistant professor at West Virginia University. Dr. Ross’ research and professional training rests on the central premise that all children have the right to access play and engage in a wide variety of recreational and leisure activities (Unicef Convention on Child Rights, 2014, Article 12 & 31, Unicef.org). Broadly, her current research examines the influence of adequate supports, and professional training on physical activity participation among individuals with disabilities.

Dr. Cathy McKay
Dr. Cathy McKay
Dr. Cathy McKay is an Associate Professor in the Kinesiology Department at James Madison University. Cathy completed her doctoral degree at the University of Virginia and is a Research Fellow with the Research Council of SHAPE America. Cathy’s scholarly interests focus on social inclusion, changing attitudes and perspectives toward disability, and disability sport education and awareness. Cathy is passionate about contact theory and applying contact theory in educational settings. Cathy currently serves as the Vice President of the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity (IFAPA), and as the Treasurer of the JMU Faculty Senate. 

Dr. Marquell Johnson is originally from Montgomery, AL. He holds a B.A. degree from

Huntingdon College (AL), M.S. degree from UW-La Crosse, and a Ph.D. degree from Oregon

State University. He is a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at UW-Eau Claire. His

scholarly activity includes health promotion for individuals with disabilities across the lifespan;

inclusion practices to increase opportunities for children with disabilities in physical education

and extracurricular activities; and occupational behaviors and the impact on health. His service interests include community-based physical activity programming for individuals with

disabilities. He directs the UW-Eau Claire Physical activity and Recreation for Individuals with

Disabilities in the Eau Claire area (P.R.I.D.E.) and P.R.I.D.E.4Adults programs. The P.R.I.D.E.

program serves children with disabilities ages 5-16 years by providing them with individualized and/or group instruction in the areas of skill development, fitness, and sport/recreational activities. The P.R.I.D.E.4Adults program serves adults with disabilities ages 17+ years by providing them an individualized exercise program.

Dr. Ann-Catherine Sullivan

Dr. Ann-Catherine Sullivan, CAPE, Certified Online Instructor (COI) is a faculty member in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science at Norfolk State University, a Historically Black College/University. She served as the Health, Physical Education & Exercise Science Department Chair from 2016-2019. She has been engaged in Adapted Physical Activity since the 1970’s and professionally in Adapted Physical Education for 27 years. As a Certified Adapted Physical Education (CAPE) and active member of the National Consortium for Physical Education for Individuals with Disabilities (NCPEID), she has served four terms on the Board of Directors. Initially for two terms as Secretary from 2013-2016, as the first elected Historian from 2017-2019 and currently as Historian 2021-present. In the role of Historian, she secured historical consortium information and documents as well as provided a historical record for the consortium. While Secretary, she created a virtual storage system and maintained virtual storage files for the Consortium. Since 2019, she has continued researching NCPEID historical records as well as written and presented on the findings. As a pedagogical and andragogical specialist, she is experienced in developing and implementing curriculum as well as faculty professional development designed around research-based best teaching and learning practices. She is experienced in differentiating instruction to meet learner needs as well as use and the implementation of universal design principles. She obtained Quality Matters certification in 2007 and has been creating and implementing online courses and graduate programs for the past 15 years. In 2020, she became a Certified Online Instructor (COI) through Learning Resources Network (LERN) and obtained the Association for Colleges and University Educators (ACUE) Micro-Credential Course in Effective Teaching Practices and Innovative Online Master Course Design Learning Community. Since 2018, she has been a Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) Educational Preparation Provider (EPP) Reviewer and has served on the CAEP Annual Report Reviewer Volunteer Corps since 2015. Dr. Sullivan was awarded The William A. Hillman Distinguished Service Award in 2020. The has secured $2,009,832 in grant funding, authored books (2), book chapters (5), published peer-reviewed articles, served on editorial review boards. reviewed books, and regularly presents at state, national and international conferences. Dr. Sullivan has served as an Adapted PE Central Expert since 2001 and has maintained multiple American Red Cross Health and Safety Services instructor and instructor trainer certifications for over three decades.

Dr. Seungyeon Park is currently an assistant professor at Norfolk State University. He completed Ph.D. at the Ohio State University majoring in Adapted Physical Education. He teaches a variety of courses including Individual Sports, Team Sports, Skill Analysis, Fund. Fitness /life, Adapted Physical Education. He is interested in Tactical Approach in PE, Motor Development & Early Childhood, Intellectual and Developmental Disability in APE, and Student Teaching.
